Conservative MP Johnny Mercer secretly visits Ukrainian capital Kyiv

CONSERVATIVE MP Johnny Mercer has been secretly visiting Ukraine’s capital Kyiv in recent days, he has revealed.

Mercer – who is a former veterans minister – said he boarded a plane for Krakow “a week ago” and flew back west on Wednesday.

The MP for Plymouth Moor View tweeted photos of himself visiting injured people in hospital, adding that he had witnessed ‘utter carnage’ alongside displays of ‘incredible human spirit’.

Mercer told The Times, “I didn’t tell anyone about it, I just disappeared. I decided it was the right thing to do.

Writing in the Daily Telegraph, he said he made the decision to travel after receiving an invitation from a former MP from the Donetsk region.

He wrote on Twitter: “Earlier this week, at the invitation of local MPs, I was in and around Irpin, Bucha and Kyiv to visit wounded Ukrainian veterans, local MPs who are fighting for save their country and to families decimated by Putin’s indiscriminate army. Total carnage; incredible human spirit.”

Government advice warns against travel to the country. Mercer is the first British MP to visit the country’s capital since the start of the war.

Tory MP Adam Holloway came under fire from Downing Street last week for visiting another part of Ukraine.

Mercer said he also traveled to Lviv, where he said he met local politicians.
