In a telephone conversation on Wednesday evening, the top Iranian diplomat and his Italian counterpart Antonio Tajani discussed Tehran-Rome relations and the latest international and regional developments.

Congratulating Tajani on his appointment as Italy’s foreign minister, Amirabdollahian expressed hope for the expansion of political, economic and cultural relations between the two countries.

The Iranian minister also highlighted the developments in Ukraine, stressing that Iran’s principled and unchanging policy has been the need for a political solution to the conflict and an end to the war.

Accordingly, he added, Tehran will continue its efforts to advance political processes in this regard.

Amirabdollahian also thanked Italy for condemning a recent terrorist attack on the holy shrine of Shah-e Cheragh in Shiraz and called on the international community to shoulder its responsibility in combating this vicious phenomenon.

He also briefed the Italian diplomat on the latest developments regarding talks on lifting sanctions against Iran and cooperation between the International Atomic Energy Agency and Tehran.

Tajani, for his part, described Italy and Iran as the heirs of ancient civilizations that can maintain extensive and growing ties.

He also stressed the importance of Iran’s role in improving peace and stability in the West Asian region, the Foreign Ministry website reported.

Tajani also spoke about the negotiations for the lifting of sanctions, saying that Italy will do everything possible to obtain an agreement that protects the interests of all parties.
